A truly expensive perfume bottle
Many of the famous perfumes in the world are created at what is known as a perfume house. It was founded in 1828. The Guerlain Perfume House is one of the oldest and most respected. Guerlain scents are inspired by confections and you can even detect hints of amber and vanilla in some of their scents. Guerlain scents have included Jicky (created in 1889), Mitsuoko (1919) and Shalimar (1925). Interestingly enough, most perfume houses now branch out and manufacture skin care products and make up. Guerlain is on of the few in the world that is still strictly a perfume manufacturer.
More than likely, everyone knows that there are auction houses across the world that specialize in arts, antiques and collectibles. Recently in a town called Arachon, France there was such an auction. At this auction there was an item that actually fit all three of those categories. Up for auction was a rare antique Guerlain perfume flacon. The famous perfume house’s original address was actually engraved on the flacon itself. The address was Rue de la Paix.
The auction was attended by bidders from countries as far away as India, Russia and even China by telephone. There were a total of over 250 bottles auctioned at this event and the highlight was this flacon by Guerlain. It sold for $54,500. That is a record setting price for a perfume bottle at an auction, breaking the previous record set by a bottle from 1920 by Depinoix.
Whereas most of the time perfume is sold because people like the scent (either how it smells to the person or how it makes them feel), this time it was sold strictly for the bottle. When was the last time you bought a perfume strictly for the bottle?
