Nobody would have forgotten the Harry Winston diamonds that completely dressed up Jennifer Jones in the Oscars more than half a century ago. The jewelry company is known for its popularity and glamour element. Winston diamonds have turn out to be an icon of global glamour arena that is built from the legacy of Hope Diamond to the sparkle of the red carpet.

Winston, the son of turn-of-the-century Ukrainian settlers, was an able gem-hunter for a very long time. Winston had great interest for the gems and exhibited great knowledge on it at the age of 12 years. At such a young age, he recognized a two-carat emerald in a New York pawnshop and bought it for just 25 cents. He was talented enough to the sold the same for $800 in just two days. He opened his own store in the year 1932 and focused on buying some stodgy collections that could be re-cut, re-set, and re-sold.

Winston made the perfect purchase of Hope Diamond from the estate of socialite Evalyn Walsh McLean in 1949. Evalyn Walsh McLean had acquired the gem from Pierre Cartier nearly forty years earlier. Over the ten years, Winston highlighted the stone in his “Court of Jewels,” exhibited to audiences across the country before re-cutting in order to increase its brilliance very much. In 1958, Winston donated the stone to the Smithsonian by sending it through a plain brown paper bag through the U.S. Mail.

In1978, Winston passed away. The company then became a publicly traded one in the New York Stock Exchange (HWD). This company’s gem had become very famous now and as many famous stars like Halle Berry and Madonna adorn the Winston collections. Winston rings starts with around $10,000. Though it is an expensive collection, it will definitely make many heads turn.
