Silverjet or how to fly green and stylish
Finally someone in the airline industry has thought of a way to do their business while trying to help the earth and offset some of the emissions caused by their tools of the trade.
In the United Kingdom there is a new airline. It is called Silverjet and it has a wondrous objective for the future. While they realize that at this point in time it is not feasible to have zero carbon flying, they are aiming to have neutral carbon flying. What that means is simply that they will try to save on the carbon emitted from their planes by saving an equal amount through investments in other more green companies.
This really is not as complicated as it might sound. They have partnered with Honda, CarbonNeutral, Sky and Barclaysand DHL in an effort to save a tonne of CO2 for every tonne they use. The aforementioned companies all have carbon friendly projects. Silverjet is also only flying between New York City and London.
The price of this however does get passed on in a small way to the passenger. Included in every single ticket sold is what they are calling a carbon offset fee. This fee however is taken and directly reinvested in eco-friendly projects like wind farms in New Zealand and energy efficient projects in Jamaica.
If they are successful in their endeavors they will be trail blazers for other and larger airlines to follow. Imagine if airlines like Delta or British Airways all decided to follow in the footsteps of this fledgling company. Imagine how much emissions could be saved.
Silverjet is showing the world that it all starts with something small. It can snowball from there and change the world.
